French prosecutors have indicted the mayor of Mont St. Michel, the 60 year old Eric Vannier, to have influenced the decisions of the council in order to further his own personal interests. The decisions are the ones to force tourists to leave their cars in the new car parking, built outside the country and to start the shuttle away from the parking lot.
What is the private interest of Monsieur Vannier? Forcing tourists to journey between the parking and the bus terminal on foot, past two hotels, the Relais Saint Michel and the Hotel de la Digue, owned by the same mayor. Not a bad promotion, free and compulsory if you want to visit this village, a famous French destination after Paris of course.
For his part, the mayor denies the charges, claiming that the shuttle service was designed this way to reduce the ticket prices and transportation costs. But who initiated the cause? Monsieur Patrick Gaulois, a former mayor, and the main competitor of Monsieur Vannier, started the tourist exploitation of Mont St. Michel.
