Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world. It is 1,002 meters high and is located in the Canaima National Park in the state of Bolívar, Venezuela on the border with Brazil. It is 19 times higher than Niagara Falls with an uninterrupted drop of 807 meters of water. The name comes from its discoverer, the American pilot Jimmy Angel. The natives considered it a sacred place. The waterfall is located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest and to see it you have to do a two day across the river or fly over the area with small planes.
Its official discovery happened in 1933 by an American aviator, James Crawford Angel that was flying over the area in search of something of mining value. He landed his small seaplane Angel but it got bogged down on the muddy ground and remained there for 33 years before being taken away by a helicopter. Jimmy Angel and his three companions managed to descend the mountain exploration Auyantepui and reach the first civilized center only after 11 days. Jimmy Angel’s plane is now shown in front of the Terminal at Ciudad Bolívar.
The falls are one of the main tourist attractions of Venezuela. The total elevation gain is almost 20 times higher than that of Niagara Falls. Reaching the base of the falls is not a simple thing. You need a flight and hiking to the waterfalls which are sold in an all inclusive package that includes flight with turboprop aircraft from Caracas or Ciudad Bolivar, then you have to take a small boat because the waterway is the only way to reach the falls. But do not panic. You can also buy a package that only includes a simple scenic overflight around the falls.
