The Special Nature Reserve Heath is located in the municipality of Santa María de Guía, in the midlands north of the island of Gran Canaria. This area of 107 hectares is the largest reserve of Monteverde on the island. It is a rugged mountain area embedded be sections of short canyons and accentuated slopes. We’re not sure if it’s a good idea to bring your bestop 4×4 with you, even though it could turn out convenient. In its northern borders Doramas Rural Park.
The reserve was protected because it contains the best heath myrtle sample of the island among which we can see endemic birds such as bicácaro and the bass or the only sign of the island and cedar pine forest areas associated with recharge aquifer and soil protection. Even with the best jeep accessories we doubt it would be pleasant to drive around these areas. Therefore this is an environmentally sensitive area.
The area has no permanent population but supports a high traffic of people because it is crossed by the highway de Moya Guide. A royal road crosses the reserve and hosts the Mondragones Dam which is visited by migratory birds and waterfowl.
