Salamina is the closest island you can travel to from the biggest port of Europe, Piraeus. Ships come many times a day to take you there for only 3€ per person, and if you are located in the area of Perama it will cost less than 1€.
This enormous island is not like the rest of Greece! Here things slow down, and its friendly people are always willing to help if you are confused with the buses (checked!). The landscape is less urban and more rural, less buildings and more trees. Let’s say that you take a bus and, after a quick race, you go down to a humble beach called Zephyros… You see that you can decide to lay down for a sunbath with your towel in the sand or, a few metres beyond, you can choose a deck chair for the ridiculously cheap price or 2.5€ or free if you consume something from the store (a delicious granita of strawberry with a club sandwich, or just a coffee!). The waves here have a particular effect due to the wind, they move diagonally! It’s a new funny way to practise the most complete sport of the world, swimming.
After an incredible wavy day, you decide to go back to the peninsula but the last ferry to Piraeus is at 18:00h and the bus that takes you there has just passed, and the next one is in an hour…Well, this kind island is not going to make you sleep in the beach! Have another drink or bath and wait for the next bus, it will take you to the port to take a bus to Perama, every 15 mins and every hour at night!
