The Singer Building is located along the Nevsky Prospect (the main street of St. Petersburg) in front of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan and is home to the eponymous Coffee Singer. It is elegant and refined. A bar / library with a perfect blend of taste and culture,. The bar is well stocked with tea and hot chocolate and cakes from the most varied tastes. Customers are comfortably seated at their table and can read one of the many books available to them. Most is in the Russian language but there are some in English and you could maybe browse through some guidebooks and postcards. But no matter, you may not even touch any of the books that crowd the shelves. I still would enjoy the atmosphere, the smell and the magic that permeates the building.
Plus if you are lucky enough to get a table in front of the windows, you can sip your tea peering into the life that flows along the road or the architecture of the Kazan Cathedral, the Basilica of San Pietro in miniature with the colonnade, the dome and the great square in front of the entrance. The bar prices are quite high, both compared to the standards of Petersburg and those of Europe but it is absolutely worth it.
After all, the holiday is about letting go and live for a week free of constraints and restrictions. If you visit a city it is also nice to experience it and take whatever special offer it has to offer. Walking on Nevsky Prospect and not entering the Singer coffee is like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope. Unthinkable!
