Although not the cheapest among the countries of Central America due to the double currency, Cuba is still a relatively inexpensive destination for those who want to take a DIY trip . It is fairly easy to build an itinerary that includes independent culture and wilderness, but can you visit the Isla Grande without spending a few days at the seaside? Impossible! Some beautiful beaches are also close to the city so they are easily accessible. Among them are Playa Ancon and Rancho Luna but the real paradise of crystal clear waters are the cays, small islands of extraordinary beauty. However, they are a little hard to get to unless you want to stay in a resort with 4 or more stars.
Among the many groups of Cayos we chose to visit the Cayerias del Norte, connected to the mainland by a 48 km long causeway. The solution has been to stay in the Hostal San Carlos in a village not far from the beginning of Pedraplen which is called Remedios. In addition to the excellent hospitality offered by our hosts Remedios turned out really special with authentic people and with a great desire to tell how it made the experience unforgettable.
The room cost per night was 25 CUC, as a means of trasoport to visit Cayo las Brujas and Cayo Santa Maria we used a taxi which costs very little if shared. The shipyards for the construction of new resorts are numerous and in a few years, as we were told by the taxi driver who accompanied us, even the last two beaches will unfortunately become exclusive villages.
Thus, a final piece of advice is to take the opportunity to visit Cuba and its Cayos because, unfortunately, the man is having the better of the wild pristine beaches.
