We are still in the early months of 2013 but by Monday, March 25 Pisa will celebrate the New Year 2014. True to the tradition of its ancient maritime republic, the city celebrated its New Year on March 25, coinciding with the day of the Annunciation and then nine months exactly before the birth of Jesus. On the website of Tourism of the Province of Pisa reads:
New Year Pisano was in force from the tenth century to 1749 and then as now the beginning of the Year Pisano is scanned and represented by a kind of sundial, a physical phenomenon as simple as spectacular and impressive: at high noon a radius of sun penetrates the Duomo from a round window of the nave and hits a marble egg on a shelf placed on the pillar next to the pulpit by Giovanni Pisano, on the opposite side.
The New Year marks the beginning of Pisa tourist season throughout the province and there are many initiatives planned for the weekend to tour New Year’s Eve dinner like the historical parade, free entrance to museums and trips to sporting events. In Pisa, in particular, you can take part in a tour of Piazza dei Miracoli (from Friday 22 to Monday, March 25 at 11:30 am), the tour I Busketo (24th at 15:30), special visit of Piazza dei Miracoli on the trail of the novel that tells the story. The event blossoms in the city from Friday 22 to Sunday 24, at New Year’s Eve dinners Sunday 24. Watch the parade in the city on Monday 25 starting at 10 am and the ceremony of sunshine in the cathedral at 11:30 am and take part in the path Galilean at 15:30 on March 25.
