Vienna has always been underestimated compared to Paris and Madrid, the three biggest European capitals. The first because it is romantic and very artistic, the second one because it is Spanish city is much appreciated by those who want to spend time in pastimes light. Instead the city of Vienna is full of surprises that can offer the visitor various entertainment, whether cultural or among the most disengaged. From the old town protected by UNESCO whose imperial architecture makes the city a true artistic jewel, to the middle class neighborhoods like Josefstadt and Neubau that are the goal of the young Viennese evening for the many discos, pubs and restaurants.
A small guide to unexpected places could bring you to the footsteps of Jesse and Celine, the protagonists of the film by Richard Linklater’s ‘Before Sunrise.’ It is on a train to Vienna that the two, an American and a French meet and care for one another. Jesse is intrigued by the French girl who manages to convince him to get off the train with the intention to go with her for a walk in the city from west station “Westbahnhof” to the “Prater”, one of the most beautiful parks in Vienna, through the “homelands”, ending with the inevitable romantic Danube River on whose banks the two chat talking about love and falling in love.
The Austrian capital may be the city of love but it is also the city of the waltz classical music (many musicians like Vivaldi, Mozart and Schubert lived there permanently) art. There are more than a hundred museums in the city including the Secession with the beautiful Beethoven fries of Gustav Klimt, indicated especially for fans of Art Nouveau and the Kunsthistorisches Museum: four centuries of European painting from Brueghel to Rubens, Velasquez, Raphael and Cellini.
A jump is then recommended to Leopold Museum. The Museum for some time was the most advanced of the city and the center of controversy because it shows exhibits “out of the ordinary” such as the recent Nude Men. For a disengaged afternoon it will be really worth your time to take trip to the beloved, already mentioned, Prater one of the largest public parks in Vienna. It was once a hunting ground of the emperors and the late eighteenth century opens to the public. Inside not only one of Europe’s highest ferris wheels but an amusement park for children and adults with more than 250 attractions.
